Scared of the dentist

Personally I’m not scared of the dentist. I don’t mind going, the whole sitting in the chair and having my mouth forced open and inspected doesn’t really thrill me but I don’t end up in a shuddering wreck because of it. Most people end up with a fear because of something that has happened in the past. Can you remember if you had a bad time at the dentist? Have you had trouble with your teeth or mouth at any point in your life? Do you have an issue with things (metal) going close to your teeth in the same way that some people cannot stand nails running down a blackboard.

Those things could very well cause issues for anyone going to the dentist, I personally know a few members of my friends and family who are afraid of the dentist.

Today I had to offer some advice to a friend to help her fear of the dentist. Fear is a strong word, more meaningful than scared, fear can cause major problems in a persons life. The fear of the dentist brought tears to this friend in particular, the fear of what the dentist was going to do or say about the friends mouth/teeth caused fright like I’ve never seen before.

How do you get round a fear of the dentist?

The dentist is there to help you at the end of the day, they’re a tooth doctor that can take problems away. You have nothing to fear, tell them if you’re scared. In the same way that people are scared of injections, take a deep breath and think good thoughts. The machines which they use are just machines and they do make some loud noises but nothing to be scared of.

Most of the time if you’re going to have some serious dental work, the dentist will anaesthetise the area of your mouth which they’re going to work on, they do this to take away the pain which *may* be caused.

Another tip!

Take someone with you, take a loved one to the dentist with you. They can give your a massive amount of support in your time of need.

If all else fails, leave a comment and talk about the specific issues you have and I might be able to offer some advice to take your mind away from it.

As always, Uncle Gav is looking for people to get in touch with any issues you have. Ask questions or have your rant which you deserve. I look forward to hearing from you.
